
February 25, 2010 - Baber Dry Goods Closed Wednesday
James Baber, owner-operator of Baber Dry Goods on the north side of the square in Leonard closed the business Wednesday afternoon.
Mr. Baber announces he will open a dry goods business in Wolfe City March 10.
Mr. Baber has made many friends during the time he has lived in Leonard. His wife, the former Miss Barbara Hudgens was not a stranger to Leonard citizens when she, her husband and three year old son, Stephen came to Leonard to make their home. She was reared in Leonard, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Hudgens.
Friends here are wishing for the best for Mr. and Mrs. Baber and son in their new location.
February 11, 2010 - Bus Service For Leonard March 1
T. O. & A. Motor Coach will make three round trips to Greenville and back to Bonham.
The bus will start the runs March 1 and will travel Bonham to Greenville making stops at Bailey, Leonard, Celeste and Kingston.
The schedule will be announced and published at a later date. The bus station will be at Gaulden Drug Store in Leonard.
Ruth Robbins Will Open Modern Cafeteria Here
Miss Ruth Robbins this week announces plans for a modern cafeteria she will open in a few weeks on the north side of the square. The cafeteria will be in the Pendergrass building formerly occupied by the Gaulden Drug Store.
Miss Robbins was formerly of Leonard. She moved here last week from Greenville and resides at the home of Mrs. R. D. Handley.
Miss Robbins said she will operate a modern Cafeteria, serving the best in foods. She will cater to private school banquets, civic or other luncheons and dinners. She will announce her formal opening date in a later issue of The Graphic.
Lawton Wilson of Van Alstyne is contractor for remodeling the building and began work this week.
October 8, 2009 - Heavy Winds Do Damage In County
A tornado that struck in Western Fannin County Sunday morning damaged 30 buildings and slightly injured three persons.
The fast moving storm uprooted trees, scattered small farm buildings, unroofed homes and barns, blew out windows, and interrupted power and telephone service from south of Savoy north to Mulberry bottoms.
Samuel Harvey, 18 and Danny Joe Harvey, 14 sons of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Harvey, suffered cuts from flying glass when the storm blasted their home southeast of Savoy. Perry Parks of Mulberry suffered a cut on the right hand when hit by a flying object. All three received emergency treatment at hospitals and were released.
The twister was described as quick", having struck without warning about 7 a.m. Sunday. More than three inches of rain had fallen during the night.
October 1, 2009 - Tigers Lose At Van Alstyne 38-18; Journey To Anna, Friday Night
The Van Alstyne football team gained revenge for last years defeat at the hands of the Leonard Tigers, when they defeated the local team by the score 38-18 last Friday night. The half-time score was 12-0 in Vanís favor.
A large crowd followed the Tigers to Van Alstyne, only to see the Tigers soundly outplayed.
The Tiger fans gained some satisfaction when Martin gathered in a kickoff and ran 80 yards for Leonardís first score. Deel scored the other two touchdowns for the Tigers.
The Leonard Tigers will go to Anna Friday night, Oct. 2, to engage the Anna Coyotes, who defeated Celeste last Friday night by a 63 to 0 score.
After the game at Anna the Tigers will play their remaining four games at Tiger Field, their home field.
September 24, 2009 - Athletic Club Sponsors Project
The Athletic Club is in the process of completing one of their recent projects, the building of restrooms on Leonard's Athletic Field.
The F. F. A. boys of Leonard high school are pouring the concrete foundation and floors for the building which will be constructed of Acme concrete blocks by J. T. Lorance of Talco.Morris Leggett and W. M. McBroom will put the roof on and Rex Weaver will install the plumbing.
The buildings will be equipped with wash basins.
This is only one of the many projects by the Club. The members just recently purchased and installed an electric score board at the Athletic Field.
Ferrell Dockery Injures Hand
Ferrell Dockery had the misfortune ofbreaking two bones in his right hand Tuesday night while at work at the General Cable Plant in Bonham.
Dockery was loading a spool of wire in a cradle when he mashed and broke the bones.
September 10, 2009 - Dwain Campbell Is Birthday Honoree Tuesday
Mrs. Darven Campbell entertained with a party Tuesday afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00 oíclock for her son, Dwain, on his fifth birthday.
The guests played games after which birthday cake and punch was served.
Birthday hats and bubble gum were favors.
Attending were Mary Ann Macsisak, Dawn and Shawn Crawford, Debbie Toney, Ricky and Rachelle McCord, Matt and Katie Tilger.
Bill Murphy Signs E T S C Contract
Bill Murphy of Farmerís Flying Service at Jones Field in Bonham, and resident of Leonard, Tuesday signed a contract with East Texas State College at Commerce, where he will train ROTC students in flying.
Murphyís duties begin with the opening of the fall term at the college.
September 3, 2009 - Barbecue Draws Large Crowd Here Friday Night
Several hundred people attended the 5th annual barbecue sponsored by Leonard Athletic Club here Friday night.
James A. Turman was the principal speaker for the evening.Club president L. R. Fullerton introduced him.
School Superintendent C. K. McClendon introduced Leroy Caudle, new principal of Leonard High School, also coach Max Harding and assistant coach Jim Hooper.
Mrs. Rex Weaver presented her pep squad in a routine before Mr. Turman spoke.
Turman declared his support of the small schools and small districts in his talk. He also said, 'We have been threatened with the loss of state representative and congressional districts because of Fannin County's dwindling population. I want to keep the districts as small as possible.
The representative said the lack of time and funds during the past legislature session was the reason some recommendations were not put into effect. These recommendations were made by committees studying the public school situation in Texas. He said the legislature passed 518 of the 1500 bills introduced during the session.
August 13, 2009 - First Cotton In County From Dial Community
E. M. Joyce, farmer in the Dial community south of Honey Grove produced the first cotton of the year for Fannin County.
Mr. Dial had a bale ginned at a Honey Grove gin Monday. A short time later Bob Milford, who lives east of Dial, also brought a bale to a Honey Grove gin.
Some local farmers have predicted the county wonít have the bumper crop of cotton which was earlier expected. The continued rains and cool weather have hampered the crop.
$50 Premium Will Be Paid For First Bale Cotton
At a regular meeting of the Leonard Chamber of Commerce Tuesday night it was voted to present a $50.00 premium to the farmer bringing the first bale of cotton to a Leonard gin.
The cotton must be grown in the Leonard area and ginned at a Leonard gin for the grower to be eligible for the premium.
August 6, 2009 - Leonard Schools Open September 1.
Supt. C. K. McClendon announces Leonard Schools will open Monday, August 31 for enrollment of students. Buses will make their regular runs of this date.
Classes will begin Tuesday, September 1 with lunches being served in the cafetorium.
Mr. McClendon said school will be dismissed November 26 and 27 for the Thanksgiving holidays.
Two days, Friday and Monday will be observed for the Easter holiday week end.
The faculty is complete the superintendent said. Two new coaches are expected to move here within the next two weeks.
W. C. Griffitt To Be Honored By Ag. Teachers Assn.
W. C. Griffitt, Vocational Agriculture Teacher of Leonard will be honored in Fort Worth, by August 12 by the Vocational Agriculture Association of Texas for 10 years for outstanding service in agriculture in Texas.
The award is a part of a four day conference, opening August 11. Sponsored by the Texas Education Agency and the Association programs of the conference are designed to bring to the agricultural leader most recent developments in technical agriculture and teaching procedures. About one thousand vocational agriculture teachers are expected at the conference, according to H. G. Barber of Floydada, President of the Association.
July 30,2009 - A 46-foot house trailer and a truck towing it overturned about 5:00 p.m.Wednesday two miles south of Leonard. There were no injuries.
The driver, whose name was not learned, said he was attempting to pass a hay truck loaded with hay when he was crowded onto the soft shoulder of the left side of the highway.
The trailer was a product of Fry Mobile Homes of Pompano Beach, Folrida, and was enroute to that city when the accident occurred.
The truck and trailer were brought to Pat Jones garage after investigation by Hunt County deputy sheriff Lem Warren and the Hunt County Highway Patrol.
July 23, 2009 - ìJoe Hall Dayî Observance Friday Night At The Leonard City Park
Friday, July 24th is the day of Leonardís 80th Picnic which is designated as ìJoe Hall Day.î
Since the Picnic is sponsored by Leonard Volunteer Fire Department, there will be some of the former ìFire Chiefsî present for the occasion.
The principal speaker Friday night at the City Park will be A. D. Moore, prominent Beaumont attorney and former Leonard resident. Mr. Mooreís mother formerly taught in the Leonard school system. The Moores have been close friends of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hall throughout the years.
Other well-known speakers include three Bonham attorneys, Mrs. O. L. Couch, Judge A. P. Bolding and Judge A. S. Broadfoot.
Rev. Thomas Reece of Trenton and Rev. U. C. Broach of Leonard will pay tribute to Mr. Hall. Other local business men will be on the program.
Mr. Hall, a retired city employee, was one of the organizers of the Leonard Volunteer Fire Department.
Hundreds are expected to be at City Park Friday night to pay tribute to one of our most deserving citizens, MR. JOE HALL.
July 16, 2009 - Supt. C. K. McClendon announces Leonardís new high school coach, Max D. Harding, of Longview will be in Leonard this week end to get acquainted with boys wanting to start football training.
Coach Harding has requested that all the boys meet with him at the school Saturday, July 18 at 2 p.m.
Miss Norma Helen Brookins of Dallas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Brookins, Route One, Leonard and Leo Ruiz of Dallas will be married Friday night, July 17 at 8 oíclock at St. Andrews Church, Elm Street and Hill in Dallas.
Miss Brookins is a 1957 graduate of Leonard high school and has been employed in Dallas the past two years. Mr. Ruiz is a graduate of Jesuit School in Dallas and attended Arlington State College. He is employed in Dallas. The couple will live in Dallas.
