Patricia Louise Gordon

March 27, 2008 - Patricia Louise Gordon was home in time for Easter morning services, passing peacefully to Heaven on Sunday, March 23, 2008.

She was born May 14, 1930, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, the daughter of Robert O. McMaken and Hilda Louise McMaken. She married Kenneth Gordon on Feb. 21, 1948.

They had a son, Daniel, and daughter, Lisa Marie, who died as an infant. Their family was expanded by “adopting” a daughter, Margaret, and granddaughter, Bethany.

Later, Margaret’s husband, Greg Oden, was brought into the fold, and they blessed the Gordons with three more grandchildren: Greg, Chelsey and Cassie. Bethany married Charles Russell, who was welcomed as a grandson, and they blessed the Gordons with four great-grandchildren: Ashley, Ryan, Arianna and Caden.

The Gordons owned several different businesses. They introduced Dallas to truly good pizza in the 60s at the Pizza Palace. And in 1976, they established Hoky Marketing, a wholesale distribution company, which allowed them to tour the state together selling the Hoky floor sweeper. They were known at the State Fair of Texas and around Dallas as the Hoky people. Ken retired in 1988, but Pat loved to work and continued the business. They celebrated 53 years of marriage before he died of cancer in 2001. Afterward, Pat bought a house in the countryside of Leonard, next door to granddaughter Bethany. She loved watching her grandchildren walk the path up to her back porch for snacks and card games with Granny. She cherished the time she had with her family in Leonard. Her devoted son, Daniel, made the Leonard house a second home and spent many afternoons in the peaceful countryside with his mom.

Meanwhile, Pat grew the Hoky business to include customers worldwide before she became too sick to work and passed the business down to granddaughter Bethany in January of this year. Pat battled cancer for over a year. She spent every minute of that year very carefully, sharing love and demonstrating an inner strength and peace that was rooted in her faith in Jesus Christ.

Pat loved her many friends and her church family at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Trenton. Her sense of humor, and ability to make everyone around her feel special made an impression on everyone she met.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 25, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Leonard.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and daughter, brother Robert E. McMaken and sister Betty Hopkins, and sister-in-law Nancy Webster. She is survived by her son, Daniel Gordon of Dallas; daughter and son-in-law, Margie and Greg Oden of Leonard; grandchildren Bethany and Charles Russell, Greg Oden, Chelsey Oden and Cassie Oden, all of Leonard; and great-grandchildren Ashley, Ryan, Arianna and Caden; sister and brother-in-law Sharon and Phil Smith, brother-in-laws and their spouses, Charlie and Theresa Gordon and Harold and Bobbie Gordon.

Sarah Stone West

July 12, 2007 - Sarah Stone West, 84, died July 3, 2007 in Raymondville. She was born Dec. 7, 1923, the twelfth child and only daughter of John A. Stone and Cora Lee Foster Stone. She lived in Celeste until she finished high school as valedictorian.

Sarah enrolled in East Texas State University (now A&M) in 1942, where she pledged the Kalir Sorority (Alpha Delta Pi), was electeda college beauty, and was chosen a member of Who’s Who. She belonged to three honor societies, Alpha Chi, Sigma Tau Delta and Kappa Delta Pi, she graduated cum laude in only two and a half years.

Sarah taught school for one year in Garland before becoming a stewardess for American Airlines. She attended stewardess school in New York City before being assigned the Fort Worth-Mexico City route because of her use of the Spanish language. After a year and a half at that job, she met and married Tom West of Celeste.

Sarah taught in Celeste for four years and loved it. She became “Miss Sarah” to children who had known her as “Sarah” all their lives. She appreciated the fact that they were respectful and eager to learn. During those years, Sarah went back to school in Commerce, receiving her Master of Arts Degree, as well as an administrator’s certificate, maintaining a straight A average.

After her husband, Tom, finished his degree, they moved to Corpus Christi, where Sarah taught English in high school and in the college. After two years in Corpus Christi, because Tom accepted the job as coach in Weslaco, they moved there in 1953.

A year later, their son, Tommy, was born, and he was the absolute pride and joy of his mother’s life. When Tommy was old enough for kindergarten, Sarah went back to teaching and was senior English teacher in Weslaco for four years.

After their move to Raymondville in 1962, where Tom was high school principal, Sarah taught for twenty-five more years. For sixteen years of that time she taught English. The last nine years she spent teaching math using computers. Her supervisor said that Sarah’s students showed more improvement than those of anyone else in the program.

Many times she was offered a college teaching position, which she refused because felt her husband’s job was more important.

Throughout her teaching career, Sarah was always willing to stay late at school to tutor students who needed help to pass. Her only reward for giving her free time was the joy of seeing students learn and improve in their studies. Her home was always open to any child who wanted help or even a good meal. She stressed to students to have pride in themselves and to realize they could achieve any goal if they were only willing to work.

After retirement, Sarah spent much of her time reading – about three hundred books a year. She found time to work in the Raymondville cemetery, caring for neglected graves and keeping silk flowers on about four hundred graves. She also loved to cook and carry food to neighbors and friends.

Sarah also liked to sew, and for years, she made all her own clothes and many for her husband and others in the family.

For eight years, she had her grandson, Trey, every weekend. This child brought her great joy and much, much love.

Sarah was preceded in death by her father and mother as well as by her brothers, Willard, Robert, Jack and Brice.

She is survived by her son, Tom, Jr.; her grandsons, Tom III and William; great-granddaughter, Lilli and many nieces and nephews whom she adored.

It could be said that Sarah had so much love to give that she spread it around to all she touched, regardless of age, race, color or creed. She strove to see the good in people and tobring light into their lives. Sarah and Tom had a happy, loving and peaceful home where friends were always welcome. Sarah worked at making people feel good about themselves.

For most of her life, Sarah was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. She love the Lord and enjoyed her church work. She tried to be a living example for good in all the lives she touched. The Bible says “Blessed are those who love the Lord,” so she must be truly blessed.

If she could speak to us today, her advice would be, “Learn everything you can because someday you may need it. Spread love and it will come back to you as an echo resounds or as wavelets spread when a rock is tossed in the water.”

We will miss you, Sarah, and be thankful for the influence you had on our lives.

Michael Dennis Norman was born the first day of spring, March 20, 1951 in El Paso, Tex.  Michael passed away on November 2, 2006 at the age of 55 in his residence located in Idlewyld Park, Ore.

Michael, for the last two years, had been living in a small community known as Idlewyld Park approximately 25 miles east of Roseburg, Ore.  Mike was very happy with his move to Oregon where he enjoyed the area very much because of the beauty and the deep forest and the North Umpqua River.  His relationship with God was very strong because he knew it was God’s hand that could make a place so beautiful.  Mike, in the last year, had told several close friends in the area that he would love to live here ‘till the day he died.  His little brother, Paul, said “It seemed only fit that the Lord would call him home because it was the happiest he had seen Mike since their father had passed away in 2000”.

Little brother Paul said, “Everyone who met Mike knew right away Mike was simply a good person with a strong Christian belief.  It was that and his southern upbringing that brought everyone to love Mike.  His peaceful, calm nature and his mild mannered way made many fall in love with him.

Mike's first love was his relationship with God, his Lord and Savior.  Mike’s second love was reading, which led him to be an Honor Student for 14 years throughout his schooling.  His next love was music of many different types, old time gospel, country, rock and roll, etc.

Michael served honorably in the U.S. Navy from June 26, 1973 – June 24, 1977.  His extremely fast typing skills and remarkable memory served him well as a Yeoman  (secretary) of the USS Forestall CVA-59.  He was honorably discharged with 3.8 honors, numerous memorial awards and letters of accommodation from the captain and the admiral of the ship.  Afterwards he went into the Naval Reserve for 3 years in Dallas, Tex. also at the NRPC of New Orleans, La.

His parents were waiting for him in Heaven, Joe K. Norman in 2000 (50 year member of IBEW local 59 of Dallas, Tex.) and loving mother Janie (Whisenhunt) Norman of Leonard, Tex. in 1974.

Mike only married once to Jaquiline Fritcher of Sherman, Tex.; they were married for eight years.  They were never blessed with children. Mike then moved to California and lived with his brother Paul and his family for three and a half years and joined the California National Guard where he was a divisional damage control petty officer, training petty officer and duty yeoman from 1985-1987. That earned him another honorable discharge with high honors.  It was at this point that Mike’s health started deteriorating, which Mike credited to his military career, and serving his country honorably.  Mike was also a current member of the American Legion of Roseburg, Ore.

Mike will be missed by his survivors:  younger brother, Paul Norman; nieces, Kim Presley of Okla.; Sandy Eccles of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; Laura Norman of Dallas, Tex.; nephews, John Norman of Las Vegas, Nev.; David Norman of Foresthill, Calif.; Joseph Norman of Sacramento, Calif.; and all of their spouses and his 10 great-nieces and nephews;  uncles Archie and Obey Norman of Leonard, Tex.; cousins Robert Norman of Leonard, Tex.; Richard Norman of El Paso, Tex. and numerous Whisenhunt relatives in the Bonham, Leonard and Caddo Mills, Okla. area.
