The Leonard Graphic

In small town America, the information that would not normally be considered news to larger, metro newspapers is what keeps a hometown newspaper interesting and desired among the readers. College honor rolls or graduations, military news, weddings, engagements, birth announcements, community and organization news - as well as the popular Years Gone By column - are some of the many categories covered in this section.

Chamber office coming along

E-mail Print PDF

June 2, 2011 - The Leonard Chamber of Commerce was recently given an office inside the Leonard branch of American Bank of Texas to use. The officers and directors are making headway in getting it set up, and hope to have a volunteer to work in the office a few days a week. American Bank has been generous enough to let the Chamber use a desk and cabinet that is already in place and the Chamber has purchased a computer and chair. There is, however, a need for office supplies, such as pens, paper, paper clips, tape, staplers, staples, copy paper, file folders, scissors, waste basket, etc. Anybody from the community wishing to donate to the Chamber office may contact Penny Edwards at 903-587-3373. All donations are much appreciated.

June 2, 2011 - Gastroenteritis is a condition that causes irritation and inflammation of the stomach and intestines (the gastrointestinal tract). The most common symptoms are diarrhea, crampy abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Viral infections are the most common cause of gastroenteritis but bacteria, parasites, and food-borne illnesses (such as shellfish) can also be the offending agents. Many people who experience vomiting and diarrhea that develops from these types of infections or irritations think they have "food poisoning," when they actually may have a food-borne illness.

Financial Focus: Investing beyond short-term CDs

E-mail Print PDF

June 2, 2011 - Many people depend on certificates of deposit (CDs) to provide extra income. Yet CD rates have been fairly low for a while. In recent months, in fact, one-year CDs were paying about 0.5%, two-year CDs topped out at around 1%, and five-year CDs paid in the 2% to 2. 3% range. Those rates are scanty enough, but they can seem even lower in an economic environment marked by rising food and gas prices.
