June 9, 2011 - American Bank of Texas in Leonard led The Leonard Fighters Relay for Life team during the county wide event on Friday, May 27 at Warrior Stadium in Bonham.

The team had a few fund raisers before the relay event, the purple potty and the skunks, and sold brisket sandwiches the night of the event. So far the team has raised $2,032.50 to date with $632.50 being raised the event night. The Leonard Fighters goal was $3,000 and it is not too late to contribute toward that goal. Those wishing to contribute may do so at the Leonard branch of American Bank of Texas - ask for Brandi Treadway. She will make sure all contributions get turned in to Relay for Life and is credited to The Leonard Fighters. The collections will be closed out in August.

June 2, 2011 - Pictured are members of the Leonard Boy Scout Troop 156 as they begin their annual Memorial Day service at Leonard Cemetery by raising the American Flag. The service was held at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, May 30. Scouts Branden Wood, Trent Isaacs and Seth Blackerby quickly raised the flag to full staff and slowly brought the colors down to half mast while Scout Brandon Scoggins played "Taps" with his trumpet. The crowd of local veterans and family members who attended listened as Korean War Veteran and Leonard Mayor Bill Yoss read off a list of the veterans interred in the Leonard Cemetery and from what war they fought. The Leonard Cemetery contains many veterans who served this country from the American Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam. - Photo courtesy of Scott Blackerby

Chamber office coming along

E-mail Print PDF

June 2, 2011 - The Leonard Chamber of Commerce was recently given an office inside the Leonard branch of American Bank of Texas to use. The officers and directors are making headway in getting it set up, and hope to have a volunteer to work in the office a few days a week. American Bank has been generous enough to let the Chamber use a desk and cabinet that is already in place and the Chamber has purchased a computer and chair. There is, however, a need for office supplies, such as pens, paper, paper clips, tape, staplers, staples, copy paper, file folders, scissors, waste basket, etc. Anybody from the community wishing to donate to the Chamber office may contact Penny Edwards at 903-587-3373. All donations are much appreciated.

The Health Corner: What you need to know about gastroenteritis

E-mail Print PDF

June 2, 2011 - Gastroenteritis is a condition that causes irritation and inflammation of the stomach and intestines (the gastrointestinal tract). The most common symptoms are diarrhea, crampy abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Viral infections are the most common cause of gastroenteritis but bacteria, parasites, and food-borne illnesses (such as shellfish) can also be the offending agents. Many people who experience vomiting and diarrhea that develops from these types of infections or irritations think they have "food poisoning," when they actually may have a food-borne illness.

Also, crafters are invited to bring their crafts to sell. The fee to be a vendor is $5 per month.
