Farmers Barbecue Huge Success
Approximately 85 farmers and Leonard Chamber of Commerce members attended the farmers barbecue and meeting in the school cafeteria, sponsored by the chamber.
This is the second year the Chamber has sponsored such a program. With such success as the Monday night program proved to be, it appears this will become an annual affair.
After a delicious barbecue dinner, Chamber President Tom Hymer introduced Fannin County Agent Gene Graves. After a short talk, Mr. Graves turned the meeting over to Charley Spence, Extension Agronomist, of Denton. Mr. Spence showed slides of grain sorghum and cotton, explaining the various effects of fertilizer on these crops. He also led a discussion on proper and improper use of fertilizer, answering questions of various nature.
Favorable expressions and comments have been made since the meeting which attracted guests from Bailey, Randolph, Blue Ridge, Trenton, Bonham, Wolfe City and Leonard. Apparently much good will result from this meeting.
A number of area farmers increased their crop yield considerably by the use of fertilizer since a similar meeting last year. The lowest wheat yields reported were 7 to 9 bushels per acre on unfertilized fields. In comparison the yield of properly fertilized fields was 37.5 to 42.5 bushels per acre.
Mr. Hymer commended the food committee for a splendid job in securing the barbecue and all the trimmings.
Local People Get College Degrees
Thirteen Fannin County students received degrees at the winter commencement exercises at East Texas State College at Commerce Wednesday.
Five of the thirteen students were Leonard men and women.
Lonnie R. Richardson and Jerry Richardson, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Richardson of Route 1, Leonard, received BBA degrees in finance and accounting.
Monty Trusty, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Trusty, received a BS degree in chemistry.
Miss Nell Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Thomas received a BS degree in elementary education, and will begin teaching the third grade at Port Arthur at mid-term.
Miss Dorothy Newman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Newman of Route 1, Bonham received a BS degree in vocational home economics.
Leon Hutton Sells Feed Business To O. K. Feed Mill
Leon Hutton announces the sale of stock and fixtures of Leonard Feed and Seed Store to Tom Hymer, O. K. Feed Mill owner.
The contents will be moved to the O. K. Feed Mill location near the Katy Railroad Station.
Mr. Hutton urges the people of this area to patronize O. K. Feed Mill, where you will find a large selection of feed and seed.
The Huttons, Leon, Ruby and Mauridell, have expressed their thanks to the people for the patronage extended them during the past eight years they have been in business.
Mr. Hutton has accepted employment with the Sherman Democrat as motor carrier.
