MAY 5, 2011 - Rhonda Hackler's sophomore English class at Celeste High School made a visit to the W. Walworth Harrison Public Library in Greenville on April 7. The students have been working on a genealogy project, and the Greenville Public Library (GPL) is home to the Northeast Texas History and Genealogy Department.

The research for this project is different than most because the students have to begin by digging into their ancestry for information relying on personal information from family members. The students have learned to navigate some of the many free research websites such as FamilySearch, Findagrave, and Txgenweb to gather information such as death certificates, census records, Civil War documents, and birth and marriage records. At the library the students were able to search for books, newspapers, and local historical items regarding their families. The students seem to enjoy this project and the opportunity to connect with their relatives as they learn a sense of self-worth and gain a personal perspective of history by discovering ancestors who have lived through various significant historical events. The students are pictured above with the GPL genealogy specialist, Sylvia Rodriguez.
